2011 Albatross Open
Four members of the YWCA Masters Swim Club (Alicia Clingan, Brooke Hess, Rachel Caldwell and Kris Rebert) along with their coach (Dave Diehl) traveled down routes 15 and 270 to compete in the Albatross short course meter swim meet. It was the second year in a row that the Adams County YWCA was represented at that annual meet, which is a very popular meet bringing swimmers in from New England through Florida and west to Chicago.
All the “Y” swimmers came home with medals and/or ribbons (first, second or third place finishes) and many personal best times were swum by the group. In addition, the group of young women (ages 25 through 49) finished second in their age group in the 200 meter freestyle relay. With only four swimmers the women finished 10th out of 23 teams and the lone male swimmer finished 17th out of 26 in the team standings. Overall, the YWCA team (with only five swimmers) finished 14 out of 30 teams.

2010 Albatross Open
On Saturday, March 21st, 2010, four members of the Adams County YWCA Masters Swim Club (Alicia Clingan, Brooke Hess, Barbara Brand, and Carol Miller) along with their coach (David Diehl) competed in the annual Ancient Mariner’s 2010 Albatross Open Short Course Meters swim meet in Rockville, MD. For three of the swimmers from the team this was their first swimming competition in quite a few years and for one member of the team it was their very first swimming competition. Their ages ranged from 34 to 61 and each came home with medals and/or ribbons (placing among the top three in their age group with four firsts, two seconds, and five thirds) as well as a second place finish in their relay. That Rockville meet has been one of the longest running and most popular Masters meets in the area sanctioned by United States Masters Swimming (USMS). USMS (USMS.ORG) is the largest non-profit, self governed organization in the world with over 53,000 registered swimmers in the U.S. Masters swimming promotes (1) health and physical fitness, (2) social and camaraderie and (3) competition for adults of all ages. USMS was formed in 1980 from the old AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) swimming organization and is one of five organizations that make up United States Aquatic Sports (USAS) along with USA-Swimming, Diving, Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming. Among the over 53,000 members belonging to USMS are swimmers of all ability levels from former Olympians to people who have never participated in any competitive sport in their lives. Some people hear the name Masters Swimming and think it is only for the elite competitive athlete, which is far from the case. In fact, more than 50% of the USMS members never compete but only swim for fitness and health. The national USMS organization is broken up by zones (regions of the country) and areas called Local Masters Swimming Committees (LMSC’s). Within each LMSC, swim clubs are formed around workout groups and pools to give people an opportunity to swim and train together. The national organization of USMS has its own bi-monthly magazine and monthly electronic newsletter and many of the LMSC’s also publish periodic newsletters, all containing interesting and informative information about improving stroke mechanics, healthy eating tips and workouts for fitness, competition, and tri-athletes (open water swimmers).
